Our Coaching Philosophy: What to expect as an LET Holistic Health Coaching client

We do things differently here at LET. It’s not uncommon for us to hear things like: 

“WAIT, you allow me to do/eat WHAT? I’ve never been given that kind of permission by a coach”

or 

“you mean I’ll never hear you say ‘why didn’t you hit ____ goal this week?’”

every time we meet. With our principles being so different from what we are all used to hearing in the Diet Culture-driven society we live in, we find most people don’t know how to respond to the way we run things here. So before you go any further, here is what you should know about our coaching philosophy: 

  1. We let YOU be the expert at your own life. 

You know yourself and your life best. There’s way more to you - your life, your values, your habits, your goals, and your dreams- than we can gather in the limited time we have together through coaching. In personal training sessions, only you can feel the lifts and, because of that, only you are able to give feedback on what we are putting YOUR body through. Only you know what your kids, spouse, partner, or roommates will eat and, therefore, how to grocery shop for them or plan their meals. Only you know if a system for achieving a goal will be practical for your lifestyle or not. 

Our job? 

To collaborate with you and make sure you have what you need to succeed, within our scope of practice. 

Your job? 

Be the expert on your life, communicate with us, put in the work to reach your goals, and collaborate with us to create a lifestyle you love. 

2. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all programs or systems. You are Limited Edition, so you deserve a Limited Edition, personalized approach. 

If one-size-fits all programs worked, a lot of us health professionals would be out of jobs and you likely would not be reading this. I wish curing diabetes, losing weight, getting lean, healing disease, and all of the other things we struggle with as human beings were as simple as “cut carbs” or “move more,” but the truth is it is far from that simple.  We all have our own set of genes, our own unique stories, exposures, relationships, habits, careers, goals, and needs. As a result of all these individualized factors that influence our health, we ALL need a personalized approach to our health goals. 

When you come on as an LET Holistic Health Coaching client, our goal is to get to know YOU - your story, your goals, and your needs - so that we can collaborate WITH you as we develop a plan to move closer to where you want to go. Every client experience is a little different and every client's plan is unique. 

3. Health is a holistic goal. We don’t believe you can achieve Holistic Health without all 6 of the Fundamentals of Health. 

The 6 Fundamentals of Health are: 

  1. Nutrition: eating to nourish your body. 

  2. Hydration: hydrating with enough water and minerals to meet your needs. 

  3. Sleep: getting enough, good quality sleep. 

  4. Stress Management: managing your stress response and cultivating healthy coping mechanisms and mindsets. 

  5. Movement: moving your body in ways you enjoy and ways that cultivate long-term health.

  6. Community: surrounding yourself with the right people in the right ways.

Each of these 6 Fundamentals of Health can be broken down into the necessary habits for optimal health. Everything we preach here at LET is backed by research and considered “common sense” in the health world. We believe this is what sets us apart: we help you optimize the fundamentals of health, through a behavior-based approach. 

Why do we do this? 

Because according to research, doing any 5 out of 6 of these fundamentals will not sustain health. For example, if you eat well, move often, manage your stress, hydrate, and have a good support group, but you only get 4-5 hours of sleep per night, eventually you will have health concerns begin to arise. The theory here is that we want to help you build a HEALTH FOUNDATION around the 6 Fundamentals. Neglecting any one of these fundamentals will leave you with a “hole” in your foundation and make health that much more difficult to sustain. And since sustainability is the key to long-term success, having a strong foundation in these six areas is the best way to ensure a sustainable lifestyle that cultivates health in all areas. 


4. Sustainability is the key to health. If you can’t do it for a lifetime, we don’t sell it to you. 

We talk a lot about what it takes to lose weight, get lean, or reverse disease symptoms, but we almost never talk about sustaining the results we achieve. Sadly, doing so often leads to us reaching a goal without the skills to maintain the results we earn. So to help make sure you reach success and stay there, our goal at LET is to help you START with building the skills needed to maintain the results you are after. Starting this way allows us to build a strong foundation around the fundamentals of health that will not only help you keep the results once you get them, but will help you enjoy the process, reach even bigger goals in the long run, and have the skills to keep progressing even after your time at LET is done. 

However, we really hope LET is a tool you benefit from for years to come ;) 

5. We believe routines give us freedom. We also believe routines need to shift as our needs shift. We teach you how to do this. 

Did you know that all emotions are the result of a fundamental need we have as human beings? Did you know that your emotions + your thoughts = your produced behaviors (habits)? It’s true! When studying behavior change or the science of habits, we begin to see how deeply our basic human needs drive our feelings and eventually our choices each day. We also are ALL (yes, even the enneagram 7s and those who swear they thrive on spontaneity) creatures of habit. Our brains naturally wire us to gravitate towards what is familiar as a safety mechanism. 

All of this to say, we believe that routines are essentially our “bumpers,” if you will. Our routines are the habits we perform naturally that tell our minds, bodies, and hearts we are safe. We truly believe that our secret weapon for creating a lifestyle we love, pursuing behavior change, and reaching goals is the same thing: our routines. So whether we realize it or not, we already have routines and habits in place we can capitalize on. By learning what our existing habits and routines are, we can figure out how to OPTIMIZE these patterns to produce an environment that cultivates health in all areas of life. 

And since our needs as individuals change regularly, we aim to help you recognize when these shifts in our needs occur, and how to adjust your routine through anything life throws at you. By doing so, we achieve a truly sustainable lifestyle.
